Chapter 20

Jemima and Dan walked to the car in silence, each lost in their own thoughts. Despite the brothers’ obvious intelligence, and even though they were possibly hiding something else from the detectives, it was apparent that they had no idea of the importance of what Tristan had just told them.

But their collective excitement about Tristan’s revelation had been tempered by Kennedy’s unprofessional behaviour. The DCI had failed the investigation by not arranging for an officer to come out and open Lawson’s safe. Jemima just hoped for her boss’s sake that when they finally got to find out what it contained, it would have no bearing on the case.

Jemima jammed the key into the ignition and started the engine. ‘I can’t believe Kennedy. He categorically told me to leave it to him! We need to get someone out here to open that safe now.’

‘Yeah, there’s one thing you can be sure of. If any of us had messed up like that he’d have had our head on a platter,’ said Broadbent. He grunted and shook his head in despair.

‘I get where you’re coming from, but I think there’s more to it. I know I’ve only been back for a few hours, so I’m not the best person to judge this, but I’m sure there’s something seriously wrong with him. He’s losing his grip. You saw him earlier. He’s not acting rationally. When have you ever known him to just walk out in the middle of a case? He didn’t even attempt to give us an explanation. It’s not like him. Something’s up with him, Dan.’ Jemima’s frustration was tinged with concern. ‘After this case is over, I’m going to sit him down and try to find out what it is. He looks as though he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.’

‘He won’t thank you for interfering.’

‘That’s as may be, but it’s a risk I’m prepared to take. He doesn’t have to confide in me. But he needs to speak to someone. Even if it’s the force’s counsellor.’ It worried Jemima that Ray Kennedy was going through some personal crisis. She knew all too well what it was like to feel out of your depth and not to have anyone to confide in. Secrets had a way of eating away at you. It was easy to start out believing that you were in control of things only to discover when it was far too late that if you’d shared your concerns at the outset, your problems would have been far more manageable.

‘Anyway, buckle up, then get Gareth on the phone. We’ve things to organise before we get back,’ she ordered. Broadbent was still fastening his seat belt as Jemima pushed the gearstick into first, released the handbrake and pressed the accelerator so forcefully that they all but skidded out of the driveway, causing a cloud of dust to rise as chippings were forced from their resting place.

Dan swallowed hard, knowing from experience that this would inevitably be a stomach-lurching journey.
